Switchboard Upgrade Cost Guide
Switchboard upgrades are one of the most common jobs we do on the Central Coast, and one of the first questions people ask is: how much does a switchboard upgrade cost?
There’s no single answer, because no two properties are exactly the same. Switchboard upgrade cost can depend on what you’ve currently got, what needs replacing, and how much work is involved in getting everything up to current safety standards.
That said, the pricing does follow consistent patterns. Here’s a realistic guide to what you can expect to pay.
So, How Much Does a Switchboard Upgrade Cost?
For a straightforward upgrade on a standard Central Coast home, replacing an older board with a modern switchboard and safety switches, you’re generally looking at somewhere between $900 and $1,400.
If you need a more complete setup with multiple safety switches, extra circuit breakers and more capacity, that typically sits between $1,200 and $2,000.
Older homes are a different story. We regularly work on properties in Terrigal, Gosford and Umina where the board still has ceramic fuses. These weren’t built to handle modern loads and need more extensive work to bring up to standard. In those cases, $1,800 to $3,000 or more is a realistic range.
For larger properties, or where a full replacement and wiring upgrades are needed, pricing can extend into the $2,000 to $4,000 plus range. Commercial switchboards can exceed this depending on the size and complexity of the system.
These figures are based on real jobs, not rough estimates. They reflect what licensed electricians on the Central Coast typically quote for work like this.
Why the Price Can Vary
A few things will push the price up or keep it closer to the lower end.
What’s already in there matters most. Ceramic fuses, old porcelain components, anything badly outdated, all of that adds time and materials to the job.
The size of the property is the other main factor. Bigger homes have more circuits and higher power demand, which means a more complex switchboard.
Wiring condition plays a part too. If the existing wiring is sound, the job is more straightforward. If there are issues, we’ll identify them during the assessment and let you know upfront before any work starts.
Access is worth mentioning as well. If the board is tucked in a tight or awkward spot, that affects how long the job takes.
When Is It Time to Upgrade?
Most people don’t think about their switchboard until something goes wrong. But there are usually warning signs well before that point.
Circuits tripping regularly, lights flickering, or a board that’s warm to the touch are all signs worth taking seriously. If your home still has a fuse-based system and you’re running a modern household, with air conditioning, multiple appliances or a home office, it’s working harder than it was designed to.
An upgrade means your system can safely handle what you’re putting through it now, and whatever you add down the track.
Not sure if your board needs replacing? It’s worth getting it looked at. You can find out more about our switchboard upgrade services or get in touch through our residential electrical services page.
Is It Worth Upgrading Your Switchboard?
Yes, and it’s not a close call. A modern switchboard reduces the risk of electrical faults, supports higher power usage across your home, and brings your installation in line with current Australian Standards.
It also makes future upgrades far more straightforward. Adding air conditioning or planning a renovation often needs a compliant, capable board behind it. If that’s already sorted, it’s one less thing to deal with when the time comes.
If you’re planning a solar or battery storage system, a switchboard upgrade is often required first. At First Choice Electrical, we can assess both at the same time, so you’re not paying for two separate site visits and the whole process moves faster.
For businesses, a non-compliant switchboard is a liability. We regularly carry out commercial switchboard upgrades as part of broader electrical maintenance or fit-out work across the Central Coast.
Getting a Clear Price for Your Property
The ranges above are a solid guide, but the only way to give you an accurate number is to see your setup in person.
We’ll tell you exactly what’s needed, why it’s needed, and what it’s going to cost, before any work starts.
